In
the book Maze Runner, the Glade is a society that is inhabited and run
by teenage boys. In this society the boys create their own justice system and
divide the tasks amongst themselves in order to function as a whole. Alby is
the main leader of the society with Newt being second in command; these two
boys are similar to the President and Vice President of the society, whatever
they say happens. There are also more leaders that oversee the different groups
of workers; Minho is the leader of the runners, Winston is the leader of the
Butchers, Gally is the leader of the builders, Zart is the leader of the
gardeners, and Frypan is the leader of the cooks. The boys make decisions in
their society by holding a meeting with all of the leaders; this is called the
council. The council talks about the situation at hand and comes up with a
decision that pleases all the leaders. When each person is dropped off, they
are evaluated on what skills they have, and the keepers pick which job they
would be suited for best. All the leaders oversee their different workers to
insure that everything gets worked out smoothly. One of the rules of the Glade
is that no one is allowed into the maze after dark, because it is too
dangerous. Another rule is that there is no fighting amongst them and that
everything must be resolved with the leaders. They enforce these rules by
holding a meeting and agreeing on a punishment whenever anyone breaks them. I
do not believe that a group of teenage boys would be as successful as the
Gladers were in their position. One reason I believe this is because the boys
would not have been able to come up with as advanced of a system, and if they
did some would oppose this system and others would abuse their power. The boys
would also act more chaotically and primitive because they do not know anything
about themselves or their environment. The Glade is a confusing place and in
reality, the boys would not be able to handle the stress of living there.
